Bridgetown Hustle Recap!

Just received an email from Amanda who organised the Backyard Blam: Bridgetown Hustle event in Portland on the 5th & 6th of February.  Turns out the event was a success!

In the words of the lady herself...

Holy crap, that was a lot of fun! Thank you for being a sponsor. Not only was I able to give out sweet prize packages to the winners, I was able to throw a lot of SWAG out into the crowd both days. They really liked that.

The 1st night our turn out was huge. Close to 300. The evening started off with an art show, a DJ, and some free beer for those who were old enough. Then we kicked off the comps with the bunny hop. There was a lot of competition. Sweet jumps led to big cheers and then next thing you know people were clapping their faces off. I was really real.

Next was open sprints. While sprints were going on there was a huge crowd checking out art and another huge crowd outside watching all the tricks (we had a berm and some jumps set up). The sprints were insane!!! We had complete bikes to give away as well as rims, chub hubs, and a bunch of other goodies. With such lavish prize packages, people were using their "try hard" muscles, for sure.

Originally we were going to have a trick comp to follow, but with so many people sprinting, there wasn't enough time. We decided to move it to the second day and no one seemed to mind. In fact, I got so much positive feedback, it was hard for me to get through the doorway with my inflated ego.

The second day we were going to start off with pump track TT, but it had been raining for a couple days solid before the event and actually, I was surprised it had stopped for the BLAM. Fortune smiled upon us once again with the weather being super sweet. The pump track was like peanut butter so we decided to have a TT around the block and everyone had to ride on a Schwinn Gremlin. The prize purse was pretty swank, so it was really funny to see big guys sprinting their hearts out on a little bike.

Next, was the trick comp. We had a BMX crew and a fixed crew. I didn't want to judge my friends so I decided to have the BMX judge the fixed and vice versa. After that we all went to the park and roped off a gorilla DH slalom course. It was sprinkling and the ground was just muddy enough where the riders peeled out at the hairpin corners. So much fun!

We decided to end the evening off with a party and some vegan waffles. I have the world's best waffle maker and everyone was hungry after competing so that was a no brainer. It is going to be tough to top this one, but I am going to try. Next event will be in the late summer. Will let you know!

Check out some of the photos!  Well organised, well set up, and a crazy awesome time!

Wow... looks just like Gypsy when he calls for the ball!

(they are Strap Ons in that crazy excited dude's hands!)

Love is a Battlefield

I almost forgot, but this Friday 12th Feb there is a ride down in Melbourne with all proceeds going to a great cause.

The ride is Valentines day themed, with contestants entering in a pair.  $10 entry with all proceeds going to Spokes in the Wheel.  Check it out, and join in knowing that your money is going to a good cause while you have a sheeeeetload of fun!

Oh, and you get a chance to win a Love Handle as well as a Babycandy!

A herd of Elephantitus's

When things are quiet on this blog, it is crazy intense in the studio... sorry for being quiet lately.

The latest to pop out of the studio:

An Elephantitus V2.  Massive, massive, massive.  No other way to describe this bag.  It has a base of 30cm x 42cm with a height of 42cm.  Putting that in perspective, it is 52.92L of volume, or 40 bottles of rum (not including a bottle in its own dedicated pocket on the outside).

This particular bag has had acute attention to detail.  The owner wanted detailed white stitching without being over the top.  Without going overboard, all the triple stitched seams are now detailed in white.  Check it out:

In addition to this we added some back padding, and ensured that all pads are removable for washing.  As with all our Elephantitus V2s, the shoulder straps are removable and can be set up for dual swing.  Given the large internal volume an X-strap (dual shoulder strap) is standard for extra carry-ability (see we are so excited about this bag we even make up our own vocabulary).

We lie... it wasn't just this Elephantitus that was born this week - this one just happened to be the prettiest!; We have a batch of 7 ready for sale.  Interested in a behemoth for yourself?  Contact us... We have a batch of grey and black outers, with miscellaneous liners.

Top tube protector

Check out our latest product... a top tube protector.  This product was built for Sasha at Pony Bikes, and may become a regular addition to our line up.

The protector is constructed from 82% reclaimed material, mostly from our bag manufacturing offcuts.  Although we try to design our bags to be as economical as possible with regard to materials usage, occasionally there are scraps left over.  This is usually thrown into our "scrap" bin, which isn't really a bin, but rather a hoarding ground for a rainy day.  Our plan is to turn all of the material in this bin into new products, so that nothing is wasted to landfill.

So that "rainy day" has finally eventuated as we have been compiling and sewing these "scraps" into functional top tube protectors.  At the moment the design features rectangular scraps stitched into "brick" patterns.

We currently have two available; one black, and the other a black/grey combo.  More will arrive shortly (and in different colours/patterns!) so stay tuned!

45cm long, sized to fit around most tubes, and priced at $35.  Custom sizing available!

GEAR Brisbane Prize

GEAR Brisbane's birthday party was last weekend.  It sure was a sweet event.  The alleycat was pretty brutal, having people jump numerous gutters and centre lane dividers (okay... it wasn't the events fault, it was our fault for wanting to go the quickest way!)

So its no wonder my bike started to feel a bit weird, particularly with the front brake.  Turns out my forks decided to get more of a rake.  So much so that the brake calipers were no longer touching their respective braking surface, but now just short of the spokes, and on the ever narrowing deep-v section.  This is my second pair of forks in two months!

Check it out (and it is a shit photo... sure is hard to photograph):

massively raked forks still attached to the wheel, with a side by side comparison with an old pair.

The winner of the event was Simon, a local courier who came in at something around 30 minutes... (myself, dare i say it at a slowwwww 1hr 30 mins).  That boy sure is fast!

This is what he won:

A custom embroidered DUB...
This is a once off bag, so if you see it on the street make sure you give Simon a high-five.  He certainly deserves both it and the bag!

BOcrew members Nate and Gypsy also chipped together to purchase Erik from GEAR his own custom DUB.  This one also features custom embroidery, although this time in colour!

Awesome event!  Well organised!  Cheers for a good time everyone.

I devoured those kebabs afterwards...

Fresh batch...

We have just finished a batch of Papermunky V2s as well as Sindrome V2s.  Check out the entire batch here.

The Papermunkys in particular are moving fast!  Get in quick... only three left.

Later this week we will be finishing a pile of Elephantitus V2s, followed by a batch of DUBs... Stay tuned.

St Ali prizes!

St Ali's alleycat is coming up this weekend and I promised you some sneak peeks at what we are whipping up for them.  Here it is:

A modified Babycandy crafted from 100% reclaimed material.

St Ali sent a pile of hessian sacks used in the transport of the beans they roast.  These are being turned into a pile of Babycandys, as well as some feedbags, tool pouches and coin pouches.  The seatbelt webbing used in the bags are also 100% reclaimed, giving a pretty unique product!

While not designed to last (the hessian frays) these are still a unique bag, and complete once offs.  It gives us a chance to play with new materials, techniques and patterns... and boy are we having fun doing so!

So... want a chance to collect yourself a once off bag design?  Head down to the St Ali alleycat this weekend!
